About

Heather Lane is a visual artist who claims both east and west coasts of Canada as home. Born and raised in Charlottetown, PEI she has resided in Vancouver since the 1980’s - punctuated by a year in Europe & the Middle East and a 3-year spell living and travelling in Asia.

She holds degrees in Fine Arts and Art History from Emily Carr University of Art + Design and the University of British Columbia, as well as a B. Comm from Dalhousie University; along side priceless mentorships in folk art & craft during 2 years in Japan.

Heather lives and paints in North Vancouver. Her work is held in collections in the USA, Mexico and Canada.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I’m attracted to paint as a living, breathing substance with its own distinctive character
and potential for alchemy. Accompanied by an ardent curiosity I set out on an uncertain
journey - leaving a painterly trace, a way of thinking with the body.

A sensibility preoccupies my process that is reflected in lines by the poet Octavio Paz -

… space is a body tattooed with signs, the air
an invisible web of calls and answers…

Surfaces become embedded with signs and fragments from the web and matrices of the
invisible and the barely perceptible. The viewer is welcomed in as personal histories merge
with collective meaning.

I’m drawn to opposites and contradictions, to obfuscation, ambiguity and mysteries. I’m
inspired by language, yet my work is about sensory perceptions that elude language.
Layered, compulsive, protracted - work suggests the influence of memory and the passage
of time - the present camouflaging the past, the past inevitably seeping through to the
present, in a metaphor for perception and experience.

My desire is to glimpse that potent moment ..
...a heightened sense of recognition in the heretofore unknown.
